The proposal in detail

The five marks

Choose the description that best fits the actual creative process. Each category has equal standing; none is a ranking of quality, value or ethical merit. Their clarity and usefulness are being tested.

Human-created

People develop the creative ideas and expression. Ordinary digital tools, proofreading and technical processing are compatible with this, including AI used for these tasks where it preserves the work’s creative content and intended expression.

Where the boundary matters

Human-created can involve several people, including editors, colourists and producers. Routine proofreading and technical correction do not require a separate mark or itemised tool disclosure. AI that supplies or reworks creative expression calls for reassessment.

See a worked example

Human-led creation

People establish the creative direction and substantially shape the result. AI generates or reworks expressive material retained in the finished work.

Where the boundary matters

Human approval alone does not establish creative leadership. Look at who established and developed the concept, structure and expressive choices.

See a worked example

Shared creative development

Human contributions and AI proposals repeatedly reshape both the concept and its expression.

Where the boundary matters

Shared does not mean a measurable 50/50 split. A conversation with AI is not enough by itself: both the concept and its expression must be repeatedly reshaped.

See a worked example

AI-led, human-shaped

AI establishes most of the creative concept, structure and material. People make substantive selections, edits or adaptations.

Where the boundary matters

Substantial editing can matter without changing where the concept began. If people reconstruct the creative direction, explain whether human-led or shared development now fits better.

See a worked example

AI-generated

AI produces the creative content from a brief, with minimal subsequent human shaping.

Where the boundary matters

This category can include a human brief and human approval. Prompt count, time spent and the tool’s brand do not determine the category.

The middle three categories

Same task. Different processes.

Hypothetical task: write a short story. The difference is how its creative direction and expression develop.

Human-led creation
A writer sets the premise, plot and voice, then substantially shapes AI-written passages to realise that direction.
Shared creative development
The writer’s contributions and AI proposals repeatedly change both the premise and plot, and how the story is written.
AI-led, human-shaped
AI proposes the premise, plot and draft. A writer substantially edits the language and scenes while retaining the AI-established concept and structure.

Reading the categories

A few useful distinctions

The category is a concise description. The declaration carries the detail, including uncertainty.

Relationships, not percentages

“Shared” does not mean a measurable 50/50 split. Do not invent contribution percentages or treat the categories as steps on a progress bar.

Direction is more than approval

Human approval alone does not establish human creative leadership. AI-generated work can begin with a human brief.

What reaches the finished work?

Retained AI-generated or reworked creative expression calls for reassessment beyond routine proofreading or technical processing.

The process decides

Time spent, prompt count and the tool’s brand do not determine a category. Look at the creative direction, development and expression.
